Your efforts and time in writing your story are worth something. If you think you're getting good exposure from non-paying markets, you aren't. Your name won't be remembered and editors at established markets won't care if you've placed 50 pieces with non-paying markets. Respect your creative output enough to demand some compensation for it. Start high up in the paying markets and work your way down. And never give your story away for free.
