GUIDED TOUR
prdo.gif TIPS FOR NEWCOMERS prdo.gif

(Post in this thread ONLY if you wish to be considered a mentor by newcomers.)

GENERAL TIPS:

prdo.gifFirst step! Tell us something about yourself in the Introductions Forum. This step is highly valued by other members, and we will appreciate getting to know a bit about you up front.

prdo.gifYour profile is accessed by clicking your image or name in the upper right hand corner. The little arrow is a drop down menu to help you access your profile and on-site email, or "messenger." Please visit your profile to personalize it.

prdo.gifHonor Points, listed on your “Edit Profile” page, are earned by completing writing challenges and official contests. Each contest and challenge will specify the number of points you can earn. Each member's points are visible beneath their avatar when they post, beside the "gear" icons.

prdo.gifThe Shoutbox, located at the bottom of the site, is for real time chat.

prdo.gif Please take the time to acquaint yourself with the FORUM RULES so that the time you spend here at LF will be a positive experience.

prdo.gifThe HELP page, linked at the bottom of every page, beneath the Shoutbox, will explain how many of LF's functions work. Be sure to check it out before you post a question in Suggestions & Questions.

prdo.gif Please feel free to contact one of the Moderators (Forum Leaders) for more information. Forum Leaders’ names are shown in the forums’ descriptions. They can be contacted using your private messenger.

FORUM GUIDE:

prdo.gif The Feedback Forums are: The Shredder, Fiction & Nonfiction, and Poetry

Binary%20star.gifarrow.gifUsing the TEMPLATE in the Feedback Forums is MANDATORY. Please, please, please, remember to use the template provided at the top of the Stories, Poetry, and Non-Fic forums. The template helps us know what kind of feedback will best serve your needs. If you do not use it, you may not receive feedback at all. See our pinned threads on the importance of the template: Read Before Posting and Just Do It

Binary%20star.gifarrow.gifGiving feedback will ensure you receive it. We are not a critique service. We are all about critique exchange. Your chances of receiving comments go up remarkably if you critique the work of others. Also, participating in other areas of the community will encourage members to critique your work.

prdo.gif Please become familiar with the content in the Rules & Guidelines forum. Doing so will ensure that you understand what is expected of you, what consequences are involved for certain behavior, and what honors and privileges you may earn for participating in the community. This is a read-only forum, so please post all your comments and questions about it either in Suggestions & Questions or in a private message to a staff member.

prdo.gif The Shredder is a more focused version of the Stories Forum. There, members may post excerpts of FICTION OR NON-FIC ONLY (no poetry), 200 WORDS MAXIMUM, with the expectation that those 200 words will be scrutinized and critiqued with a fine-tooth comb. Though this forum is not for the faint of heart, constructive criticism is encouraged.

prdo.gif Interactive Writing features several opportunities for members to create stories together.

prdo.gif In Writing Challenges you will find fun writing exercises that earn you Honor Points upon completion. Add these Honor Points yourself on your "Edit Profile" page.

prdo.gif Writing Questions is the place to ask other members questions on the method and business of writing.

prdo.gif Resources is where you may find and share interesting links for research or useful tools and information on writing. This forum also features information about the world of publishing.

prdo.gif The Boasting Wall is a vital subforum of our Announcements forum, where you may tell us your publishing success stories. After all the critiquing you receive, this is where we hope to see your name!

prdo.gif Questions about the site and suggestions for its improvement may be posted in Suggestions & Questions. Posting questions in the Shoutbox works also, when others are on.

FORMATTING YOUR POSTS:

arrow.gif Be aware that INDENTS MAY NOT WORK. So when you post, it's advisable to use WEB FORMAT. In other words, single-spaced, no tabs or paragraph indents, just an extra space between paragraphs.

OTHER INFORMATION:

prdo.gif LF features a growing and interactive TABLE OF CONTENTS that categorizes many of our threads on a variety of topics from grammar to publishing markets and world-building resources. Find the information you're looking for faster!

prdo.gif Many have asked about the words like "Wish" and "Spark" and so on that appear above your avatar. For a rundown on this, please visit the Member Groups and Ranks thread.

prdo.gif The colored uppercase letters that you may notice preceding some member names in places like the Shoutbox, denote staff rank only, and are not a part of the member's username:
A = Administrator
L = Forum Leader
C = Core Member

LA = Leader Assistant

To learn how you may qualify for Core Member status or the new Critiquer and Shredder badges, please visit this thread: STATUS OPTIONS AND BADGES

MENTORING SERVICE:

For newcomers who desire a more personalized acquaintance with the community, you may contact any of the members who have posted below via your private messenger.

MENTOR OPTION #1

Hi, I'm Alatariel!

I've been a member of LF for just over a year, participated in all of the contests so far, written an article for the e-zine and am the Non-Fiction and Writing Questions Forum Leader.

On another note, I love acting and theater and am receiving my degree in Theater soon. I love writing fantasy, sci-fi, horror and urban fantasy.

Uh...what else??

I love food! :chef:

I'm always around and would love to help you get to know Legendfire. It's a really great place and a wonderful resource.

Okay, I have to run- PM me if you would like to chat!

"Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?...There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you...It is not just in some; it is in everyone. And, as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others." --Marianne Williamson

MENTOR OPTION #2

Hi there!

I'm The_Wolf :wolf:

I have been a member of LF for around nine months now and I really appreciate the forum and everyone on it. I am also the General Discussions forum leader. I am also planning to have my first novel published by early 2012; a World War II historical fiction novel following an RAF Coastal Command squadron that undertakes secret missions against German U-boats and battleships.

I have also done drama (for eight or so years) and love writing anything to do with historical fiction, war, romance, action/adventure and supernatural themes. I am currently at university doing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Media & Communication, History and English.

I also love cranberry chicken pizza! :love4u:

I will be around most days and if you need any help at all, just shoot me a PM and will try to help you as best I can.

I thought I posted as a mentor to this thread? I am so absent-minded sometimes. Maybe I dreamed it. Anyway, Raveneye, I can be a mentor too. Here's my spiel:

MENTOR OPTION #5

Hi, I'm Bird, the resident Shredder forum leader and the leader of Writing Resources. I'm in my late twenties and am a recent college graduate in physics (with a minor in music composition). I have an incredibly fluffy cat, who loves sitting in windows, who I named Quark - yes, named after a subatomic particle in the particle physics.

When I'm not doing physics, I write. I write science fiction and dabble in fantasy, cyberpunk, and apocalyptic fiction. My main speciality is in world-building, where I spend a lot of time building planets, solar systems, cultures, languages, and other fun details of the worlds of my stories.

Some hobbies of mine include:
  • biking
  • sculpting things with clay
  • creating technology designs - most of them are space ship designs in a vector art drawing program.
  • reading - all sorts of fiction but primarily science fiction and fantasy; for non-fiction I read science books, philosophy, and poetry.
  • drawing maps - specialize in topographic and city maps
  • composing music - mostly instrumental but I do write lyrical songs as well.
  • playing video games - I prefer role-playing games, action/adventure, strategy and 4X games, and puzzle games.
I may seem formidable as the Shredder dictator, but I'm a playful soul who enjoys intellectual discussion and humourous ancedotes. Check out my Table of Contents in the Writing Resources that I've been slowly compiling if you're interesting in resources to help with anything involving writing, world-building, and research. If you need any other help, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Spoiler

Taken from If You Want to Write by Brenda Ueland (used only the first (and sometimes second) lines of each point to simplify list):

If you want to write:
1. Know that you have talent, are original and have something important to say.
2. Know that it is good to work. Work with love and think of liking it when you do it.
3. Write freely, recklessly, in first drafts.
4. Tackle anything you want to.
5. Don't be afraid of writing bad stories. To discover what is wrong with a story write two new ones and then go back to it.
6. Don't fret or be ashamed of what you have written in the past.
7. Try to discover your true, honest, untheoretical self.
8. Think of yourself as an incandescent power, illuminated perhaps...
9. If you are never satisfied with what you write, that is a good sign. It means your vision can see so far that it is hard to come up to it.
10. When discouraged remember what Van Gogh said: "If you hear a voice inside of you saying: you are no painter, then paint by all means, lad, and that voice will be silenced, but only by working."
11. Don't be afraid of yourself when you write.
12. Don't always be appraising yourself, wondering if you are better or worse than other writers.

 Hi, my name is Elise.

Although I'm an LF member for just over a year I've written and submitted for over fifteen years in every genre except porn.

With a sold story ($10 for 750 wds) I'm also a published writer.

I'm a retired Medical Laboratory Scientist and my hobbies include:

In addition to my diploma: EKG and Lung function certificates, Basic Microbiology diploma and a courses in Blood Group Immunology and Tropical Pathogenic Parasitology.

science (esp. haematology)

reading & writing (mostly SF and F but anything printed will trigger my reading addiction)

astronomy (ground my own mirrors & lenses)

As a writer I like short stories (abt. 5K words) in, as I said, any genre.

Also, I speak Dutch, German and a smattering of Portuguese.

Being fiercely independent I am a solitary Wiccan.

I like to make my own furniture and, as a single, drive my own household (NO Telly!).

PS

I have and like a wicked sense of humour!

I firmly believe in vampires, faeries, honest politicians and other mythical creatures.

The art of good writing is knowing what to leave out.

If it was important enough to write it, it's certainly important to read it.
