What book have you just read?

I have recently just finished a book called "Vanish" by Tom Pawlik, and it was really interesting and intriguing. Here is an outline of the back cover in regards to what it is about. If you feel like reading it go for it...its a great book to have a perspective on certain things within our own lives. :)

Quote

Three strangers each encounter the same mysterious storm and awake the next day to find that everyone else has vanished. There's Conner Hayden, a successful but unscrupulous trial lawyer who has forsaken his family for his career; Helen Krause, a middle-aged model struggling to come to grips with her fading beauty; and Mitch Kent, an enterprising young mechanic unable to escape a past that still haunts him. Afraid and desperate for answers, their paths eventually cross and they discover they are being watched. Elusive and obscured in shadows, the "observers" are apparently forcing them to relive vivid hallucinations of events from their past. They discover a mute homeless boy in tattered clothing and believe he may hold the key to the mystery, but the "observers" soon become aggressive and the four are forced to flee. When the boy disappears, the four decide to head from Chicago to Washington, D.C., in search of answers..

I just finished jPod by Douglas Coupland. It's certainly different to the tv series but nevertheless just as funny. I'm so sad that it ended :( I'm going to have to find more of Coupland's works.

I finished reading hunter s thompson s fear and loathing in las vegas a few weeks ago. Truthfully it wasn t as graphic as i thought it would be but that is probably because i had watched the movie prior to reading the book. I don t know what most of those drugs are- like methane and ether or how exactly they affect the mind and body. I think the lawyer was a horrible character, more so because he was real. I spent most of the book trying to sift through what i thought real and possible and what i did not. For example - did he in fact go to the narcotics meeting in vegas completely out of it. I think not. His blasphemy was difficult to get through since the use of the name Jesus was on every other line at least. Hunter for the most part was a loser and a drop out. His claim to fame came a few years prior to fear and loathing when he wrote and published a book-like documentery on life riding around with the notorious Hell s Angels biker gang. Fear ... Vegas was orginally published in two parts in Rolling stone magazine. Hunter shot himself in his home a few years ago. Honestly if I had been him and had done the things he claimed to have done i would have shot myself too. Hunter being a typically selfish self centered individual chose to shoot himself while his son daughter in law and baby grand son were at his home visiting. It seems that even in death he had to spread the suffering and make everything about himself and his needs.

The Man Who Sold The Moon by Heinlein - again.

My favourite story in it is still 'The Roads Must Roll.' I can't get over the awesome picture of fricking motorised roads :D . Oh, and the engineers seizing power is awesome.

Reading "Atonement" At the moment, it is actually a very good book. We have to read it for English. Just finished My sisters Keeper - Jodi Piccoult.

Citizen of the Galaxy by Robert A. Heinlein. Great stuff on the subject of freedom and inprisonment - the main character goes through several "free" societies which restrict him just as much as when he was a slave. Also a unique take on fighting between spaceships - Armour is useless, the distances are massive, and it's all down to the 'firecontrolmen' to aim missiles with mathematical aid, at a constantly moving target.

Finished reading Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood an hour ago. It was so good, there is usually nothing this decent at our embarrasment of a school library. The ending made me so angry though because it was a major cliff-hanger. I raged at Atwood for a few minutes then discovered via wikipedia (Praise Wiki!) there is a sequel. Phew. I plan to find it no matter what!

I just put down metro 2033.

I had played the game, and wanted to read it so bought the translated version on order .. but i just couldn't! Im not sure why, maybe because it was translated badly, things just didn't work properly and it was more annoying. I found myself working though the lines like i was editing a draft - rearranging sentences and swapping words.

A shame, i was looking forward the the more in=depth version of the games plot, and reading about Khan, my favorite character in game.

Right now, i've moved on to Fahrenheit 451.

Just finished Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld.

The first chapter seemed a little dull to me but maybe that's just me because once we got into the plot of the girl I couldn't put the book down! It was one of those books that you think "Jesus, how did he even think of something as clever as that?!"

The only other thing that I didn't like was it ended so abruptly with a major cliff-hanger ending, according to wiki the sequel doesn't come out until October-November this year!

Sigh, other then that it was a damn good read!

Just finished The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. The same day, I picked up The Girl Who Played with Fire, and I'm almost donoe with that one too! These books are amazing; filled with action, love, journalism, mystery, and lots of coffee!

Recommended.

Steerpike Icon : (Yesterday, 03:22 PM) Yep. That's the way to do it. You can always work your way down in the markets later.

.C.Spiral Icon : (Yesterday, 03:21 PM) =D I always aim high
Steerpike Icon : (Yesterday, 02:38 PM) Hey cats...in following up with a post I made, I'd like to encourage everyone NOT to submit to non-paying markets. Your efforts and time in writing your story are worth something. If you think you're getting good exposure from non-paying markets, you aren't. Your name won't be remembered and editors at established markets won't care if you've placed 50 pieces with non-paying markets. Respect your creative output enough to demand some compensation for it. Start high up in the paying markets and work your way down. And never give your story away for free. That's my view :)
